Few of us will be lucky to complete one magnificent thing in a lifetime. Kanye West, in my opinion, has done it six times, but “808’s and Heartbreak” is by far my most loved, and my favourite album of all time. It may not be perfect, and to many it may be lacklustre, but the introspective nature of Kanye’s words accentuate purpose in aspects of life that are often ignored in his genre of music. From the bleak instrumental sections of “Say You Will”, to the way you can tell he’s smiling while singing the first lines in “Paranoid”, and finally to the soul-searching advice in the closing sentiments of “Pinocchio Story”, Kanye weaves a story of a life shattered by emotional conflict. If “The College Dropout” was the first steps, “Late Registration” is the middle of the staircase, “Graduation” is the clawing to the top, and “My Beautiful Dark Beautiful Twisted Fantasy” and “Watch the Throne” are the consolidation and reminder of an unrivalled excellence. But despite the heights Kanye reaches, none match the existentialist low of “808’s and Heartbreak”, a drop so severe that it only makes the rise to the top that much of a better story.
